I first realized there was a whole world of RC vehicles last Christmas when shopping for a "toy" gift for my husband, brother, and dad. I ended up buying a cheapie indoor helicopter from Target and I quickly learned why the price was so low for such a fun gadget. One of them was broken within hours! The high price is a drawback, but what a fun and educational hobby for a kid who's responsible enough to take care of the RC car. Beats video games any day of the week!

Great post! I also got my first RC car when I was about 10. I was given an electric powered rc kit as a christmas gift. even though it was a beginner model, it was still fast enough for me to run it into the curb hard enough to break it on more than one occasion...

my suggestion would be to insist that your son start with an electric model - unless he proves himself to be a better driver than i was at his age! if not, you'll be spending quite a bit of $ just to keep repairing it :)

check out my new blog - the first post outlines the differences between electric and Gas Powered RC Cars. good luck!

I started when I was around 10 as well with the cars and soon moved up to planes but I love all RC vehicles.

If you get the chance I would love it if you could check out my blog "RC Powered". There's not much there yet but I am hoping to post some articles about my first RC experiances which may be of use to your son.
